The consortium of STC International, STC-NESTRA and Deltares carried out a study aimed at assessing the technical, economic and environmental pre-feasibility of a new canal for inland waterways transport (IWT) in Argentina. This was done on behalf of Rijkswaterstaat and Netherlands Enterprise Agency (RVO.nl).
The study included a hydrological, multimodal and socio-economic cost-benefit analysis to assess the potential of using a navigation canal (‘Hidrovía Continental’) to:
- provide a transport alternative through the use of IWT and multimodal combinations for transport overseas;
- offer additional irrigation possibilities for agriculture;
- reduce the current flooding problems of the Pampa Húmeda.
The study results were presented during a Binational Water Conference in Buenos Aires (29-30 October 2018). Around 500 people attended the event and the results were published in a well-known national newspaper in Argentina.
